What it means
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) — a general screening measure of weight relative to height — plus the WHO category it falls into and the weight range considered "Healthy" at your height.
How it’s calculated
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². The result is classified against the World Health Organization's general-population BMI categories, the same widely-used public health reference used worldwide.
Common Defence use cases
A quick general health screening check, and tracking how your BMI changes over time as weight or fitness changes.
Formula
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)²
Healthy Weight Range = 18.5×Height(m)² to 24.9×Height(m)²Assumptions
- This is a general screening measure only — not a diagnosis, and not a Defence-specific fitness standard. Actual service physical standards vary by service, rank and category and are not modeled here.
- BMI does not distinguish muscle mass from fat mass — a very muscular person can show a higher BMI without being overweight. Use the Body Fat Estimator for a composition-aware estimate.
- Uses the WHO's general-population BMI category thresholds (Underweight/Healthy Weight/Overweight/Obese) — a widely published public-health reference, not a military standard.
- Height can be entered in centimetres or feet/inches — enter one or the other, not both.
Example calculations
Height 175 cm, Weight 70 kg
BMI 22.9 (Healthy Weight) — healthy range 56.7–76.2 kg
Height 5 ft 9 in, Weight 90 kg
BMI 29.3 (Overweight) — healthy range 56.8–76.5 kg
