How this works

What it means

Your closing leave balance for a period, given your opening balance plus leave earned minus leave availed.

How it’s calculated

Closing Balance = Opening Balance + Leave Earned − Leave Availed, for the period you specify.

Common Defence use cases

Reconciling a leave account after a reporting period, or quickly checking a running balance without a full accrual calculation.

Formula

Closing Leave Balance = Opening Leave Balance + Leave Earned − Leave Availed

Assumptions

  • This is a simplified, illustrative estimate only — always verify against your official leave account.
  • Opening Leave Balance cannot be negative — this calculator validates that as an input, since a negative starting balance is not a normal state.
  • Does not model leave type distinctions (earned vs half-pay vs casual), carry-forward ceilings, or year-end lapsing rules — Leave Earned and Leave Availed are taken as given figures for the period.
  • If Leave Availed exceeds Opening Balance + Leave Earned, the closing balance is shown as negative with an explanatory note, rather than being blocked — this may indicate an error in your figures, or a leave account rule (e.g. advance leave) not modeled here.

Example calculations

Opening balance 120 days, leave earned 15 days, leave availed 10 days

Closing Leave Balance 125.0 days

Opening balance 10 days, leave earned 5 days, leave availed 20 days

Closing Leave Balance -5.0 days (more availed than was available)

Frequently asked questions

A negative starting balance isn't a normal leave-account state, so this calculator validates against it. If your closing balance calculates to a negative number, that's shown as a result with an explanatory note instead.
