What it means
Your estimated monthly House Rent Allowance (HRA) — a percentage of Basic Pay paid to personnel who arrange their own accommodation, with the percentage set by the classification of your posting city.
How it’s calculated
The current 7th CPC HRA table pays 30% of Basic Pay in X class cities, 20% in Y class cities, and 10% in Z class cities — the rates in force since Dearness Allowance crossed 50%. HRA is not payable at all if you've been allotted Government Accommodation, and Field Station postings are not calculated in Version 1 (see Assumptions).
Common Defence use cases
Estimating your monthly HRA ahead of a posting to a new city classification, checking how moving out of Government Accommodation changes your allowances, and cross-checking a figure shown on your pay slip.
Formula
If Accommodation Status = Government Accommodation: HRA = Not Applicable
If Posting Type = Field Station: HRA = Not Modeled in Version 1
Otherwise: Applicable HRA % = 30% (X class) / 20% (Y class) / 10% (Z class)
Monthly HRA = Basic Pay × Applicable HRA %Assumptions
- This is a simplified, illustrative estimate only — not an official calculation. Always verify the exact amount with your pay and accounts office before making financial decisions.
- Version 1 only models the current officially notified HRA rates (30% / 20% / 10% of Basic Pay for X / Y / Z class cities), which took effect once Dearness Allowance crossed 50% — the most recent revision under the 7th CPC HRA formula. It does not model the earlier, lower rate tiers that applied before DA crossed 25% and 50%, since this calculator has no date or DA-history input.
- Applies the same HRA rate table uniformly across Armed Forces Officer, Armed Forces PBOR and Defence Civilian categories — the officially published table sets HRA by city classification, not by employee category, and no verified Defence-specific HRA variation could be confirmed for Version 1.
- HRA is treated as Not Applicable whenever Government Accommodation has been allotted, per the general rule that HRA is not admissible alongside government-provided housing.
- HRA is not calculated for Field Station postings in Version 1. Field areas typically follow separate rules (e.g. Field Area Allowance, Compensation in Lieu of Quarters) that could not be independently verified with confidence — excluded rather than guessed.
- Marital Status is captured as an input but does not currently change the calculated HRA figure — no verified rule tying HRA/CILQ rates to marital status for Defence personnel could be confirmed for Version 1.
- You must know whether your posting city is officially classified X, Y or Z — this calculator does not look that classification up for you.
- Basic Pay can be entered manually or resolved from the 7th CPC Pay Matrix Calculator (Pay Level + Cell Number) — see that calculator's own assumptions for what the Pay Matrix figure does and doesn't include.
Example calculations
Armed Forces Officer, Basic Pay ₹56,100 (Level 10, Cell 1), Peace Station, X Class City, Private Accommodation
Applicable HRA 30% — monthly HRA ₹16,830
Defence Civilian, Basic Pay ₹35,400 (entered manually), Peace Station, Y Class City, Private Accommodation
Applicable HRA 20% — monthly HRA ₹7,080
Armed Forces PBOR, Basic Pay ₹21,700, Peace Station, Z Class City, Government Accommodation
Not Applicable — HRA is not admissible while Government Accommodation is allotted
