How this works

What it means

An estimate of your monthly basic pension on retirement, along with your age and length of service at that point. This is Version 1 — a simplified planning estimate, not an official pension figure.

How it’s calculated

The calculator applies the single most widely-cited baseline rule: 50% of your last basic pay for 20 or more years of qualifying service, reduced proportionally below 20 years. Qualifying service is auto-calculated from your joining and retirement dates, but you can type over it if your reckonable service differs.

Common Defence use cases

Getting a rough monthly pension figure while planning ahead of retirement, comparing Normal Retirement against an upcoming Voluntary Retirement date, and sanity-checking a figure quoted elsewhere before formally verifying it.

Formula

Qualifying Service (years) = days between joining date and retirement date ÷ 365.25 (or your manually entered figure, if provided) ratio = min(Qualifying Service ÷ 20, 1) Estimated Basic Pension (monthly) = 50% × Last Basic Pay × ratio

Assumptions

  • This is a simplified, illustrative estimate only — not an official pension calculation. Always verify your actual entitlement with your Pension Disbursing Authority, PCDA(P)/PCDA(O), or your service HQ pension cell before making financial decisions.
  • Assumes the "Last Basic Pay" you enter is already your correct reckonable emoluments as defined by pension rules — this calculator does not add Military Service Pay or any other element to what you type in.
  • Assumes pension scales proportionally for qualifying service below 20 years and caps at 50% of last basic pay for 20 years or more. Actual rules for minimum qualifying service, invalidment pension, and short-service exits are not modeled.
  • Applies the same formula to Normal Retirement and Voluntary Retirement. Actual VRS rules may include additional weightage-of-service or different eligibility conditions — Version 1 does not model these.
  • Does not account for commutation of pension, Dearness Relief, family pension, disability pension, or One Rank One Pension (OROP) revisions.
  • Does not distinguish between Army, Navy, Air Force, or between Officers and JCOs/ORs, whose exact pension rules and reckonable-service definitions can differ.
  • Last Basic Pay can be entered manually or resolved from the 7th CPC Pay Matrix Calculator (Pay Level + Cell Number) — see that calculator's own assumptions for what the Pay Matrix figure does and doesn't include.
