How this works

What it means

Your estimated one-time Retirement Gratuity — a lump sum paid on retirement, based on your Reckonable Emoluments (Basic Pay + DA) and completed six-monthly periods of qualifying service.

How it’s calculated

Retirement Gratuity is 1/4 of your Reckonable Emoluments for every completed six-monthly period of qualifying service (up to a maximum of 66 periods, i.e. 33 years), subject to a cap of 16.5 times Reckonable Emoluments or ₹20,00,000, whichever is lower.

Common Defence use cases

Estimating your lump-sum gratuity ahead of retirement, checking how additional qualifying service or a DA revision changes the figure, and cross-checking an amount quoted by your accounts office.

Formula

Reckonable Emoluments = Basic Pay + DA Half-Yearly Periods = min(floor((Qualifying Service in months) ÷ 6), 66) Raw Gratuity = 1/4 × Reckonable Emoluments × Half-Yearly Periods Estimated Retirement Gratuity = min(Raw Gratuity, 16.5 × Reckonable Emoluments, ₹20,00,000)

Assumptions

  • This is a simplified, illustrative estimate only — not an official calculation. Always verify the exact amount with your Pension Disbursing Authority or PCDA(P)/PCDA(O) before making financial decisions.
  • Models the standard CCS (Pension) Rules, Rule 45 formula: 1/4 of Reckonable Emoluments per completed six-monthly period of qualifying service, capped at 16.5 times Reckonable Emoluments or a monetary ceiling.
  • Uses ₹20,00,000 as the monetary ceiling — the last confidently verifiable figure, in force since 1 January 2016. This ceiling has periodically been revised upward in line with Dearness Allowance thresholds; if a higher ceiling has since been officially notified, this calculator will understate the cap until independently verified and updated.
  • Only completed six-monthly periods up to a maximum of 66 (33 years) count towards the formula, even if your actual service is longer — entering more than 33 years of qualifying service is accepted, but only the first 33 years are reckoned.
  • Reckonable Emoluments for gratuity is Basic Pay + DA admissible on the date of retirement, per Rule 45(6) — this calculator does not add Military Service Pay or any other element.
  • Does not distinguish between Army, Navy, Air Force, or between Officers and JCOs/ORs, whose exact reckonable-service or category-specific gratuity provisions can differ.
  • Does not model death-cum-retirement gratuity, invalidment gratuity, or service gratuity for less than 10 years of qualifying service — Version 1 covers standard retirement gratuity only.
  • Basic Pay can be entered manually or resolved from the 7th CPC Pay Matrix Calculator (Pay Level + Cell Number) — see that calculator's own assumptions for what the Pay Matrix figure does and doesn't include.
