What it means
The lump sum you'd receive for commuting part of your monthly pension, and what your reduced monthly pension would be afterwards.
How it’s calculated
The portion of your Basic Pension you choose to commute is multiplied by your Commutation Factor (from the official table, for your Age Next Birthday) and by 12 to give the lump sum. Your monthly pension is then reduced by the commuted portion.
Common Defence use cases
Estimating the lump sum from commuting a given percentage of pension, comparing outcomes at different commutation percentages, and checking the resulting reduced monthly pension before deciding how much to commute.
Formula
Commuted Portion = Basic Pension × Commutation % ÷ 100
Lump Sum Commuted Value = Commuted Portion × Commutation Factor × 12
Reduced Monthly Pension = Basic Pension − Commuted PortionAssumptions
- This is a simplified, illustrative estimate only — not an official calculation. Always verify the exact amount with your Pension Disbursing Authority or PCDA(P)/PCDA(O) before making financial decisions.
- The Commutation Factor table (Second Schedule to the CCS (Commutation of Pension) Rules, 1981, varying by Age Next Birthday) is NOT embedded in Version 1 — it could not be independently verified with confidence across every age, and an incorrect hard-coded factor risks a materially wrong lump-sum figure. Enter the factor applicable to your Age Next Birthday from the official table yourself.
- Age Next Birthday is captured for reference alongside your entered Commutation Factor, but this calculator does not look up or validate that the factor you entered actually matches that age — cross-check against the official table.
- Does not enforce an official maximum commutable percentage — this varies by category and service and could not be confirmed uniformly, so any percentage from 0–100% is accepted. Check your applicable ceiling before relying on the figure.
- Does not model restoration of the commuted portion of pension after the applicable period (commonly 15 years) — Reduced Monthly Pension shown here is the rate immediately after commutation, not a future post-restoration figure.
- Basic Pension can be entered directly, or derived from Basic Pay (manual or resolved from the 7th CPC Pay Matrix) × Pension Percentage — see the Retirement Pension Calculator's own assumptions for what a percentage-of-Basic-Pay pension figure does and doesn't include.
