How this works

What it means

An estimate of your income tax liability for a given financial year, based on the officially published slab rates for the New or Old Tax Regime.

How it’s calculated

Your taxable income is taxed progressively — each slab's rate applies only to the portion of income within that slab, not the whole amount. A 4% Health and Education Cess is added on top. If your taxable income is at or below the Section 87A rebate threshold for your regime and year, your tax is fully rebated to zero.

Common Defence use cases

Comparing New Regime vs Old Regime tax at the same taxable income, checking how tax changes across financial years as slabs are revised, and sanity-checking a figure from a payslip or tax software.

Formula

Slab Tax = Σ (portion of Taxable Income in each slab × that slab's rate) if Taxable Income ≤ Section 87A rebate threshold: Slab Tax = 0 Cess = Slab Tax × 4% Estimated Income Tax = Slab Tax + Cess

Assumptions

  • This is a simplified, illustrative estimate only — not a substitute for filing advice. Always verify with a tax advisor or the Income Tax Department before filing.
  • Only financial years with officially published slab rates are listed (FY 2023-24 through FY 2025-26). If your financial year isn't listed, slab rates may have changed — check the latest official notification.
  • "Taxable Income" is assumed to already be net of whatever deductions and exemptions apply under your selected regime — this calculator does not calculate or apply deductions (e.g. Section 80C, 80D, HRA) itself.
  • Does not calculate surcharge, which applies to taxable income above ₹50 lakh and has its own marginal-relief rules — Version 1 excludes it rather than risk an incorrect partial implementation.
  • Applies the same Old Regime slabs regardless of age — senior and super-senior citizen slabs are not modeled.
  • Applies the Section 87A rebate as a simple threshold (zero tax at or below the limit, full slab tax above it) without modeling marginal relief for incomes just above the threshold.
